REACH OUT AND READ OF THE SOUTHEN TIER

Reach out and Read is an early literacy and readiness to read program that is presented to families in the office of health providers in the community. The children ages 6 months to 4 years receive a free, age appropriate book and encouragement is given to both the child and caregiver to read to the child. Small | Large

BIKE AND SKATING SAFETY

Bike helmets save lives and save a child's future. This program demonstrates the correct way to fit a bike helmet for your child. A local police officer reviews the laws related to biking and in-line skates.Small

Also, how to talk with your youth about the tough issue of suspected drug use, and what you can do as a parent in that situation. Helpful guidance on talking with your child about the sensitive issue of sexuality.

HEARING HEALTH

Early detection and treatment of hearing problems can improve quality of life from infancy to elderly. This tape demonstrates hearing testing in very young children and adults. There are many NO COST interventions to improved communications when dealing with a hearing loss and this program tells you about some of them.

DENTAL CARE

Through the use of a "Peanuts" cartoon, you and your child will learn the proper techniques for brushing and flossing. The importance of good oral health cannot be over-emphasized. Health problems ranging from mild to severe have been related to poor oral health. The dental services that are available in Chemung County, through the Chemung County Health Department, allow every resident in Chemung County to have affordable access to dental care. WIC AND ROAR

"The Women, Infant and Children's Supplemental Nutrition Program, commonly known as WIC, and Reach out and Read of the Southern Tier (RoaR) conducted a joint project on early literacy and readiness to read. Learn about each of these programs in Chemung County and how they worked together. The community has generously supported RoaR with books; now learn how to volunteer time to RoaR. Small | Large

I'M HAVING A BABY -- IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PREGNANT WOMEN ABOUT HIV AND AIDS
This video uses dramatization to inform pregnant women of the importance of being tested for HIV, and of steps they can take to reduce the risk of HIV infection for themselves and their babies. The video also points out that, if a women is infected with HIV, she can reduce the risk that her baby will become infected, by choosing to take AZT during pregnancy.

YOU, YOUR BABY AND HEPATITIS B -- WHAT EVERY WOMEN NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT HEPATITIS B
In New York State, every pregnant woman must have a blood test to determine if she is carrying the hepatitis B virus. This video is about May, a young woman who learns that she is carrying the virus. Her doctor explains to her the steps that need to be taken to protect May, her family, and her baby.

TELLING PEOPLE WHO NEED TO KNOW -- THE PARTNER NOTIFICATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR PERSONS WITH HIV
If you're HIV positive, telling your partners can save lives. But telling other people can be hard to do. The New York State Health Department's Partner Notification Assistance Program can help. A professional counselor can either talk to your partners, or help you figure out how to to tell them yourself. The program is completely confidential. This video shows how partner notification can help you.

BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE VACCINATE
This 15-minute video for parents explains the urgency of making sure children are vaccinated. Produced in collaboration with the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and CDC.
