Chemung County Samaritan Center
Wellness
Center
The Samaritan
Wellness Center was established in 1999 through a collaborative
effort with St. Joseph's Hospital and their Care-A-Van in Elmira,
N.Y. to provide physician referrals, flu shots and offer health
education for those individuals at or under the 185% poverty
level in Chemung County. In 2001 the Samaritan Center expanded
its space and moved to its current location in the the Samaritan
Center and was funded through St. Joseph's Hospital, initially
offered basic health screening services to families and individuals.
These include Blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, colorectal
screenings, diabetic awareness and dental hygiene education
for children. St. Joseph's Hospital currently visits the Center
every fourth Tuesday of the month and offers blood pressure
and blood sugar screenings. In 2001 a total of 308 individuals
attended the clinic. Thirty individuals received flu shots at
the annual flu shot clinic in November 2001.
Today the
Wellness Center not only offers blood pressure and blood sugar
screenings but also holds a monthly Health and Nutrition Awareness
Day quarterly on the third Tuesday of the month. Numerous community
agencies participate to help bring health education and nutritional
awareness to members of our community. To date (9/02) 219 individuals
have benefited from this event day.
On Wednesdays,
representatives form the Child Health Plus/Family Health Plus
Program are available to answer questions and also enroll eligible
individuals and families in the program.
